About

Who we are

We’re FLOR. We produce an innovative design system of 50cm (19.7 inch) carpet squares that come in a vast array of colors, textures and styles.  Modular FLOR squares can be configured in any length, shape or size to create custom rugs, runners or wall-to-wall designs that are uniquely beautiful, easily adaptable and more responsible than conventional floor covering.  And unlike traditional rolled carpeting, FLOR squares connect securely together with our ingenious, patented FLORdots™.  These sturdy, non-toxic adhesives connect to the bottoms of each FLOR square and not to your floor’s surface – no nails, padding, or glue – and can be easily removed or replaced, providing maximum flexibility and portability while delivering remarkable performance.

Exploring the world of FLOR is easy, too.  You can experience FLOR online, through the FLOR catalog, by visiting one of our FLOR stores in New York (SoHo & Brooklyn), Chicago, Santa Monica, Atlanta, Dallas, Houston and San Francisco.

Put simply, we care about Design. The big “D” is intentional. At FLOR, Design is more than superficial.  FLOR’s philosophy on Design supports the ever-changing world of everyday life with realistic solutions, impeccable aesthetics and respect for the environment.  It is inspired living.

How we started

Greg Colando was President of Interface’s American modular floor covering business in 2000, when he noticed emerging consumer behaviors in the marketplace:  urban lifestyle resurgence, growing Internet purchases and increased design demand. These trends, compounded with conventional carpeting’s limitations, posed an opportunity to deliver a more responsible and design-focused floor covering directly to consumers.  He would call the new entity FLOR.

To help realize the FLOR vision, Colando and his creative partner, noted interior and product designer Chip DeGrace, formed a team of experts from the worlds of design, direct marketing and Internet technology of such brands as Google, Apple and Kodak. Their charge was to communicate FLOR as a smarter floor covering choice to design-savvy, environmentally-aware consumers.

The FLOR concept went live in the spring of 2003 with the launch of the FLOR catalog and FLOR.com. The team eschewed traditional advertising and instead used targeted events in major cities to generate word-of-mouth buzz among design trendsetters. Every magazine interview resulted in media placement.  FLOR’s message clearly hit a sweet spot with design- conscious consumers.

Our roots

FLOR is part of Interface, Inc., a global, publicly-traded company founded in 1973 by entrepreneur Ray Anderson.  Back then, most U.S. offices used broadloom, wall-to-wall carpeting.  But evolving workplace dynamics – like organizational change and technology – made it clear to Anderson that broadloom was an inefficient choice for offices, so he saw an opportunity to introduce modular floor covering to corporate America.

Modular floor covering (also called “carpet tiles” or “carpet squares”), created less waste since less carpet cutting was required for installation; worn areas could be selectively replaced, and an integrated backing made separate padding obsolete. Today, the majority of offices around the world are covered with modular floor covering.

In 1994, Ray Anderson became keenly aware of industrialism’s destruction of the planet’s resources and, consequently, of Interface’s role in maintaining the delicate balance of environmental sustainability.  As a result, Ray committed his company to the goal of Mission Zero: To eliminate any negative impact the Interface family of companies may have on the environment by the year 2020.

Looking Forward

We are passionate about FLOR squares and believe and that the FLOR modular system is the future of floor covering.  It’s simply a smarter, more design-friendly, environmentally-responsible alternative.

As we look forward, FLOR will continue to explore the possibilities in design and innovation.  We will continue to seek like-minded partners for raw materials sourcing, manufacturing expertise and reclamation as we march toward our Mission Zero goals.  And, we plan to expand the FLOR store concept to other cities across the country so more people can experience FLOR first hand, with the ultimate goal that FLOR be the first choice in beautiful and responsible flooring for homes and offices around the world.
